We have had some of the best meals in Israel. Lots and lots of hummus, something we typically don't eat a lot of in the states. The hummus here can include anything, meat, boiled eggs, beans (all types), you name it, you can get it. All served with warm pita bread. The sweets are really really sweet and sticky. Mostly made with pistachios, almonds, lots of nuts nuts nuts. So if your allergic, don't bother! Lamb is the meat of choice. Chicken comes in a close second. I (Andrea) have enjoyed lamb a lot. Of course fish is very popular too, served whole and you have to pick out the bones... not a big fan (again Andrea). The breads are amazing.... no such thing as low carb here! We have eaten our way thru Israel most of the time skipping breakfast (only because our hotels haven't included it for the most part) and opting for a lite lunch of hummus and pita and saving our appetites for dinner.
